About Us

The Lawrence Free Methodist Church was one of the first churches in Lawrence, and we've been growing since. We now have a vibrant community of over 700 regular attenders, with newcomers checking out our services and programs every week. Founded in the 1860s, the small church built its first building on the corner of 12th and Connecticut. It was dedicated on March 31, 1872 by B. T. Roberts, founder of the denomination. Attendance ranged from 25-30 during the 1880's and wasn't until the 1950s that the attendance reached 100.

A building fund was established in 1944 and by 1962 sufficient funds had been raised for the congregation to break ground for a new building. 802 West 22nd Street Terrace became the new home for LFMC on July 12, 1964. In 1969 an education wing was added to accommodate increased attendance.

By the mid-1980s it became clear that the church would outgrow this facility in the not-too-distant future so in 1986 land was purchased at 31st and Lawrence Avenue. Four years later, the congregation began meeting in our current facility. Within ten years, we had maxed out our space on Sunday morning and kids and teens were meeting in offices, closets and halls for small group times.

With God's blessing, we were able to add a children and youth wing onto our current facility. This new space is more than just classrooms; it contains irresistible environments for kids and teens during their most formative years of life so they can discover how awesome God is.
