40 Days in the Word

Love the Word, Learn the Word, Live the Word!

January 29 will be the kick-off of a new sermon series, titled 40 Days in the Word. What a great theme! During this series, we are encouraging all Life Groups and weekly Bible studies to participate in special 40 Days in the Word sermon-based Life Groups that are open to anyone. These groups will be meeting at the church Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights, beginning January 31. Just pick the night that works best for your schedule. If you are not in a Life Group and would like to meet others who are looking for a Life Group, this is a great opportunity! From these open groups, we hope to help people form new Life Groups. There will be an information/sign-up table in the lobby after Sunday morning services. Sermon study guides will be available in the lobby Sunday mornings, beginning January 29.
Also, there is additional content available on the Internet, including a brief video related to the topic of the week, featuring various Bible teachers throughout the country. You will need to create a personal account to make use of that. There is no cost. It is simple to do:

  • Using your Web browser, go to 40ditw.com
  • Under “MY DAILY STUDY HABITS,” click on “SIGN IN/SIGN UP.”
  • Enter your email address and create a password. You will soon receive an email that will contain a link labeled “Create your 40 Days in the Word Account Now.” Click on that link, fill out the information requested, and you are ready to go.

Discovering Your Life Message workshop

March 3, 9:00 to 11:45 a.m., Family Life Center

The Scriptures say, “…you are a letter from Christ. This letter is written not with pen and ink, but with the Spirit of the living God.” Everyone has a life message! God has shown up in our lives in ways that He wants us to recognize, and through which He wants us to glorify Him. Saturday, March 3, we are offering the Discovering Your Life Message workshop. This is a great tool to help you identify, understand, and clarify what God is doing in your life. There will be a handout/tool provided that you will be able to use as you continue your journey through life, walking with Him. The cost is $5 for one person, or $7.50 for a couple. Continental breakfast will be provided as well. Look for sign-up sheets in the Sunday bulletin and in the church lobby. Questions? Contact Pastor Larry Baldridge (lbaldridge@lfmchurch.org).

Young Professionals

The LFMC Young Professionals is a community of young adults seeking to grow in their relationship with God, connect and expand relationships with fellow young adults, and serve the surrounding community. We accomplish these goals through a weekly study and various social and service events. Come join us as we continue our study on Francis Chan’s book, Crazy Love.
For the next few weeks we will view a brief video from Francis and discuss the main topics in the book. This study will not require you to purchase a copy of Crazy Love (although it would be a good addition to your personal library). We meet at 7:00 p.m. each Tuesday in the Revolution (youth) room in the basement.

If you would like more information about our group, contact Eric Buselt at ebuselt@yahoo.com or Britt DeTienne at bdetienne@gmail.com.

Men’s Breakfast

Hey Men! In 2012, we are looking to start a new connection opportunity for men at LFMC. Journeymen, our ministry to men, is quietly growing through High Quest groups and Men’s Fraternity, but one thing that has been missing is some regular fellowship for all men in the church. We intend to change that with a monthly Men’s Breakfast on the second Saturday of each month. We’ll have a great breakfast together here at the church, one of our fellow men may have something to share briefly, and it will be a great time to spend together. Our next breakfast is scheduled for Saturday, February 11, at 7:30 a.m. in Room 24/25. All men, young and old, are welcome. We hope to see you there!

Primetimers

Twenty-six members and two guests braved a cold, wintery Tuesday in January to attend the Primtimers luncheon on January 17. Thankfully, there was no snow on the ground. The soup helped warm the members, and the salads, sandwiches and desserts assured that no one left hungry. The program (a series of get-acquainted exercises) helped each of us get to know one another better. (Thanks to Ruth Mitchel for organizing it.) Buster concluded the day with information about the Gideons’ card program.

We will meet again for a luncheon on Valentine’s Day, February 14. It will be a potluck. Please bring a main dish and a salad or dessert, along with your place setting. Our speaker will be Doug Hartwell. He will share some of his experiences in Afghanistan. If you are fifty-and-better, bring your sweetheart and join us on Valentine’s Day. If you don’t have a sweetheart, come anyway, and enjoy the fellowship.

A program note: it has become necessary to change the speaker for March. Tom Mach, a local author, will be the speaker. Tom’s books are historical fiction.

If you have any questions you can contact Ruth Mitchel at 785-842-1375, or Ernie Dyer at 785-841-2990.

Bible Quizzing Update

On January 13 the quiz team traveled to McPherson for a meet hosted by Central Christian College. Students had an opportunity on Friday night to enjoy the company of other quizzers from around the Great Plains Conference, including some crazy “Minute-to-Win-It” games. On Saturday, we worshiped and enjoyed a devotion from one of CCC’s worship bands and CCC admissions staff. Then we headed off for a great day of quizzing, primarily over Hebrews 11 and 12. As we finished the day, we learned that our quiz team had done a fine job. Here are the results:

Young Quiz Division
Lawrence Team—1st Place
Sarah Case—1st Place in Individuals
Morgan Monroe—participated in Individual Finals

Veteran Quiz Division
Lawrence Team—2nd Place (only lost to 1st place team after an overtime round and 3 sudden-death questions)
Rebekah Case—1st Place in Individuals
Matthew Jacobsen—2nd Place in Individuals

Rebekah also quizzed out of every round she participated in during the day. Matthew had two quiz-outs, as well.
It was a great trip, and we look forward to our next meet in Omaha on February 11. This month, we are finishing up the book of Hebrews and beginning the first two chapters of 1st Peter. Please keep our students in your prayers for diligent studying, ability to bring the scripture not only into their head, but also into their hearts, and safe travel for our meet.

In February, we invite you to consider supporting our quiz team as we will be taking orders for breakfast burritos, sold by the dozen. This fundraiser will help offset our costs as we make plans to travel to the Quiz Nationals this summer in Seattle, WA.

Blessings,
Vicki Case, Travis Jacobsen, and Roger Stone

Chicago Mission Trip

July 15-20

Registration will open on February 1 for our summer trips! Revolution students will travel to Wheaton College, located in the suburbs of Chicago, to participate in a Student Life Camp/Mission Trip. Several hundred students will be gathered for the same purpose, participate in worship led by The Museum, and learn from talented speaker David Nasser. We will be serving in area ministries that are already in operation in and around Wheaton, IL. As with all of our summer trips, fundraising is available to help families offset the cost. Details are available for fundraisers on our Web site.

Chili Cook-off

On Sunday, February 19, Revolution will host a chili cook-off to help sponsor our summer trips. There will be prizes awarded by the judges for first, second, and third place. Also, contestants can win the spiciest chili award and the fan favorite award, which will be determined by votes from everyone tasting.

Please plan to join us for lunch after church. There is no set cost for the chili, which includes toppings and sides. Instead, we are asking for donations. Your support will help make an eternal difference in the lives of our teens!

Discovery Unlimited in February

Hall of Fame inductee, Tournament MVP, medal of honor recipient, Oscar nominated, Ph.D. Attach any one of these qualifiers to a person’s name and they’re instantly honored for their accomplishments. And while honoring people for their achievements is great, we’ll be talking about honor in a different respect this month.

We’ll define honor as letting someone know you see how valuable they really are. We can’t all be MVPs, Teachers of the Year or Spelling Bee champions. But we are all valuable because we are made in the image of God and are loved by Him. That includes you, me, that mean kid down the block, your boss, the mom at PTA who never lets you forget her child is a genius, the waitress who takes half an hour and gets the order wrong, the person asking for money down on Massachusetts Street….everyone!

The memory verse for February says, “Love each other deeply. Honor others more than yourselves”
(Romans 12:10, NIrV). Each week, we’ll learn more about what honor looks like through the life of David, as chronicled in the books of 1 and 2 Samuel.

February 5 – God chooses the next king from an unexpected place—the youngest boy watching sheep in the fields (1 Samuel 16:1-13). God doesn’t see as the world sees; He looks at the heart instead. Bottom line: Honor those who are overlooked.

February 12 – We discover that honor can also be shown between friends. In response to David’s rising popularity, the current king, Saul, is increasingly more concerned about his own status and power. But his son, Jonathan, values his relationship with David more (1 Samuel 18:1-4 and 5-9). He doesn’t just say so in words, but also through his actions. Bottom Line: Honor others more than yourself.

February 19 – It’s important to honor the people in charge of you. If you don’t and you dishonor them, it usually doesn’t end well. Often, people get hurt. Just ask King David’s son, Absalom. He rebels because he thinks he’d make a better king (2 Samuel 15:1-16a, 18:5-7, 15, 31-33), but the natural consequences of showing dishonor led to a real tragedy. That’s why it’s best to Bottom Line: Honor those who are over you.

February 26 – We discover that another way to show honor is through worship. In some cultures, dancing is a special way of expressing honor to someone important. In this Bible story, King David is so excited that the ark of the covenant—and God’s presence—is finally coming to his city, that he dances on and off the whole way there! (2 Samuel 6:12b-22a) When we really love God, it’s natural to Bottom Line: Honor God in front of others. We just can’t help ourselves!

Junior Camp

For current 3rd-5th graders
June 11-15, 2012

As you make your summer plans for your 3rd-5th graders, be sure to include Junior Camp! Located at Rock Springs Ranch near Junction City, Kansas, the camp has swimming, canoeing, archery, elective classes like crafts, and much, much more! Morning and evening chapel times will provide children with inspiring worship and relevant messages.

Junior Camp is a wonderful, safe environment for kids to begin to explore new hobbies, make new friends, take on new responsibilities and connect with God on a deeper level.  Our very own Bethany Harvester will be back as camp director for the second year and some of our children’s ministry leaders will be cabin leaders.

Registration forms will be available February 5 in the church lobby and on our church Web site at http://www.lfmchurch.org/junior-camp.

An easy way to help fund camp or provide scholarships for kids

Are you looking for a way to help fund church activities for your children or provide scholarships for children who can’t afford to go to camp or on missions trips? If so, check out our gift card fundraiser.

Paying for church activities and programs can be easy! By taking advantage of our gift card fundraiser, you can earn money to help offset the cost of camps, church-sponsored events, missions trips, and church programs. The only thing this costs you is a minute of your time to purchase gift cards. We currently stock Dillons (includes Kwik Shops), Hy-Vee, Checkers, Walmart (includes Sam’s Club) and Kohl’s cards. In addition to buying regular items at these stores with the cards, you can also use them to purchase gas for vehicles and prescription medicine.

Families with young children who take advantage of this opportunity throughout the year will easily be able to pay for VBS, our Wednesday night program, and a significant portion of summer camp for their kids at no cost to them! If your children are really young, start using the program now to save money up for when they are old enough to go to camp. The longer you use the certificates, the more money you can earn to offset the cost of church activity fees.

If you don’t have children, we encourage you to buy certificates to help fund scholarships for children or teens. When you buy your certificates, just indicate whether you’d like your profit to go towards children or teens. What a wonderful way to fund camp and missions trip scholarships for kids and teens!

We can’t stress enough what a great program this is! Please stop by the kiosk on Sunday mornings or drop by the church during normal business hours to learn more about how these certificates work and to get involved.
